In the ninth month of my pregnancy, I went to my mother-in-law’s birthday: she welcomed me warmly and offered me cake, but when my dog ate a piece of that cake, she suddenly collapsed to the ground and could no longer stand up

I was nine months pregnant and knew I could go into labor literally any day. Still, I decided to go to the family celebration — it was my mother-in-law’s birthday, and it would have been awkward to refuse. The house was full of people.

Relatives were laughing, making toasts, drinking. Everything went on as usual — loud and seemingly calm. I started to feel short of breath, so I went out to the veranda, sat down on a chair, and simply breathed in the fresh air.

After a few minutes, my mother-in-law came up to me. She was holding a plate with a slice of cake. “Eat, dear,” she said.

“I baked it myself.”

I thanked her but didn’t eat. My dog was sitting next to me. She looked at the cake with such pleading eyes that I felt sorry for her.

I broke off a small piece and gave it to her. I saw nothing wrong with it — just an ordinary homemade cake. About thirty minutes passed.

Suddenly, my dog collapsed hard onto the tiles. At first, I thought she was just tired or had decided to lie down. But she didn’t get up.

I bent down to her and immediately felt that something was wrong. Her breathing became heavy and uneven, her body seemed limp. I got scared.

I went to my mother-in-law and told her that my dog had become ill after eating the cake. I wasn’t accusing her, just stating a fact. But she immediately flared up.

She started saying it was my fault, that dogs shouldn’t be fed human food, that I was making everything up on purpose to make her look guilty. And my dog was getting worse with every passing minute. I realized there was no time to lose.

We rushed to a veterinary clinic. I was sitting in the car, stroking her head and praying that she would simply survive. And what the veterinarian told us after the examination filled me with real horror…

At the clinic, the doctor examined my dog for a long time, then came out to us and asked just one question:

“Did you yourself eat any of that cake?”

I answered that I hadn’t.

I said that only the dog had eaten a piece. The doctor let out a heavy sigh and asked me to sit down. He explained that my dog had a severe poisoning.
