A Gift From the Heart — And the Grandson’s Reaction No One Expected

87

When my grandson announced he was finally moving into his own apartment, pride and sadness braided together in my chest. I wanted to give him something special for the next chapter of his life — a gift worthy of the young man he’d become. A big new TV… a nice sofa… something that would make his place feel like home.

But on my fixed retirement income, those kinds of gifts live in the realm of dreams. So I chose to give him something money could never buy. I spent evenings at my kitchen table gathering old photos — holidays with crooked Christmas trees, toothless grins after losing baby teeth, birthday cakes that leaned a little to one side.

On each page, under each picture, I added a note in my own handwriting. Not poetic words, just honest ones: little reminders of who he had been, and how deeply I had loved him through every stage. When moving day came, I handed him the album with a smile I practiced in the mirror so it would hide my trembling.

He opened it halfway, flipped a page or two, and muttered,

“Thanks, Grandma.”

Then he went back to packing. I told myself that boys his age didn’t mean to be careless — but it still hurt. That night, my house felt louder in its silence than it had in years.

I sat in my armchair wondering if the album meant anything to him at all… or if, in the bright world he was stepping into, a grandmother’s love had already faded into the background. The Knock That Changed Everything
The next morning, the phone rang. It was my daughter — her voice tight, shaky in a way that made my heart jolt.

What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
