When Kate arrives home early from her trip, she is surprised to see Ella, the nanny, leaving her house on a day she wasn’t supposed to work. When questioned, Ella and Kate’s husband, Dan, offer shaky explanations that don’t add up. What was the real story behind the unexpected visit?
When you’ve been married for nearly a decade, you think you know your partner inside and out, right? Dan and I had built a life together filled with love, three beautiful kids, and routines that kept the chaos at bay. But sometimes, even the most solid relationships can be shaken by the smallest cracks.
Ella was a godsend when we hired her two years ago. I loved my career as a wedding photographer, but raising Lucy, Ryan, and our baby, Abbie, felt like I was juggling on a tightrope. It was my sister who introduced Ella to us.
“Look, Kate,” my sister, Clem, said as she cut fruit for the kids. “When I had my knee surgery, Adam and I decided to hire a nanny. It wasn’t for long, just about six weeks, and then I was going to be back to the grind.
But we both knew that we needed the help.”
“But do you think she’ll be a good fit with us?” I asked. “Absolutely. And the kids will learn a sense of independence from her.
She has her own way with them, and it’s really impressive.”
I was sold. So, we hired Ella a few days later. She fit seamlessly into our family, just as Clem had insisted she would.
The kids adored her, and I trusted her with them. They were my priority, after all. As the weeks turned into months, I grew to trust Ella with my life.
Or so I thought. It all started when I returned from a trip earlier than expected. The assignment, a lavish wedding shoot for an editorial spread in a huge magazine, had wrapped up ahead of schedule.
I was exhausted, and my feet hurt. In an ideal world, I would have booked into a spa and relaxed until my body told me that it was time to get home again. But as a mom, I didn’t have that luxury.
Instead, I just couldn’t wait to get home to surprise Dan and the kids. I drove home late in the evening. As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed Ella slipping out of the house.
As far as I knew, it was her day off, so her presence immediately raised red flags. “What the hell, Dan?” I muttered to myself as I reached out for my handbag in the passenger seat. “Ella?” I called out, stepping out from the car.
