I Returned Home for My Tablet and Found the Attic Ladder Pulled Down – Then I Heard Someone Tell My Son, ‘Put This in Mom’s Bag’

41

I slipped home in the middle of the day to grab my tablet, expecting nothing more than an empty, quiet house. Instead, I found the attic ladder hanging down. Then a voice drifted from above, a child’s voice, followed by words that stopped me cold.

I’ve been with my husband, Liam, for 15 years now.

We got married young, built our lives piece by piece, and somehow ended up with four kids. We’ve got three tornadoes under ten and our oldest, Aaron, who just turned 13.

Life is loud, messy, and chaotic in the way only a house full of kids can be.

Most days, the only time it’s quiet is when everyone’s asleep. And even then, someone usually wakes up with a bad dream or a sudden need for water at two in the morning.

So for me, quiet usually means trouble is brewing.

Silence in this house has never been a good sign. It means someone’s drawing on the walls with permanent marker, or the dog is eating something she shouldn’t, or Jack and Ella are plotting their next grand escape from bedtime.

But that afternoon was different.

The kids were all at daycare or school, and Liam was at work. For once, the house was supposed to be empty.

I only swung by in the middle of the day because I’d forgotten my tablet on the kitchen counter that morning, and I didn’t want to survive the rest of the workday without it.

I figured it would be quick.

In, out, and back to work. Maybe grab a granola bar on my way out.

Except, I froze the second I stepped in.

My heart skipped a beat when my gaze landed on the attic ladder hanging in the hallway. Let me explain why that was so unexpected for me.

You see, in all the years we’ve lived here, I’ve never touched that ladder.

Not once. Liam and I had always joked it was just for insulation and dust, maybe some old holiday decorations we’d forgotten about years ago.

We never went up there. Ever.

At first, I thought maybe I was imagining things.
