I Was Planning Our First Anniversary Surprise When Some ‘Baby’ Texted My Husband

49

On the occasion of our first anniversary, I had everything ready to go. A romantic dinner at the same restaurant where Adam and I had our very first date was the ideal surprise for one another. I wanted it to be a celebration of love that had carried us through the preceding six years of our lives together, and I wanted it to be unforgettable.

Over the course of several weeks, I had been secretly plotting, concealing minor details from him, carefully wrapping a gift, and envisioning the expression on his face when he realized that I had remembered every single detail. In spite of this, Adam’s phone suddenly lighted up with a message just as the puzzle pieces of my surprise were beginning to come together. The name of the sender caused my blood to turn ice cold.

The words “Baby” appeared on the screen. My breath became stuck in my throat, and I became still. This message, which was brief yet devastating, is as follows: Shouldn’t we expect you to be here tomorrow?

You made a commitment. My mind started to race around. Who exactly was this “Baby”?

Why did she request to know if he would be present tomorrow, which is our anniversary? The sound of my heart beating could be heard in my ears. I instantly had the sensation that everything I thought I knew about Adam and about us was delicate, like glass that was about to break.

I forced myself to grin for the rest of that evening, even though I didn’t feel like smiling. As he kissed my cheek and talked about his day, Adam was as calm as he had always been. In the meantime, my stomach churned under the weight of dread and mistrust.

My sleep was disrupted. In the morning of the following day, I made a choice that I never imagined I would make: I followed him. Adam departed earlier than he normally would have, and instead of going to the workplace, he went across town to a quiet neighborhood that I was unfamiliar with.

While my heart was pounding, I parked a few blocks away and watched as he brought grocery bags to the door of a residence that was not particularly large. When I opened it, my entire world shifted once more. It was my sister, Lily, who was standing there.

I hadn’t communicated with her in years, not since the arguments that followed her marriage and the subsequent divorce. As a result of the fact that she and I had become so far away, the sight of her now, beaming at my husband and holding him as if they were sharing a secret, almost caused me to break down. Tears caused my eyes to get blurry.
