At the airport, I found my daughter-in-law sitting on a bench with my grandson asleep in her lap and three battered suitcases at her feet.

For a moment I did not understand what I was looking at.

JFK was moving around me the way airports always move, rolling luggage and impatient footsteps and announcements echoing through the terminal, the smell of burnt coffee drifting from a stand near baggage claim. I had just stepped off a flight from London, still wearing the charcoal suit I had worn through a closing meeting that ran too long and a transatlantic crossing where I slept barely an hour. I was expecting my driver. The usual black sedan at the curb, the usual polite nod, the usual quiet ride back to Long Island while I worked through messages and pretended the world still operated on the schedule I preferred.

Instead, I saw Elena.
