I booked the best steakhouse in town for my parents’ 40th anniversary dinner. A private room, their favorite menu, and a restored framed wedding photo as a gift. It wasn’t about making a statement.

I just wanted one night where everyone sat down, shared a meal, and acted like a family.

We arrived five minutes early. My son Mason held my hand as we walked in, excited in his quiet way. He kept asking if it was okay to order dessert.

I told him he could have whatever he wanted. Inside, my sister Jill and her family were already seated. Her husband Doug had a drink in hand.

Their boys were loudly playing on tablets. Jill didn’t stand up — she just looked over her shoulder and said, “Oh, hey.” My mom gave me a distracted hug. My dad barely acknowledged me.
