Part One: The Badge
My name is Connie Hart, and I was thirty-two years old when my family decided I didn’t deserve a chair at my own brother’s wedding. I didn’t know anything was wrong at first. The ceremony was fine—quick and polished, the kind that blurs together behind soft piano music and the sound of polite applause.
Ryan stood tall at the altar like he’d always wanted to be seen: the calm one, the golden one, the son who did everything right. Cara looked beautiful in a way that made you almost forget weddings are built on stress and spreadsheets and arguments about napkin colors. Ryan barely spoke to me that morning, but I told myself he was nervous.
Weddings do that to people. They make them strange, distant, focused on a thousand tiny details that suddenly feel monumental. I wasn’t expecting special attention.
I wasn’t expecting to stand beside him as a bridesmaid or make a toast or have anyone introduce me like a celebrity. I just assumed I was included the way family usually is—present, accounted for, part of the fabric of the day. When the ceremony ended, people flowed toward the reception venue like a gentle tide, laughing, taking photos, passing around compliments like candy.
The reception hall was bright with tall windows and white drapes that softened everything. Outside, early evening sunlight sat on the parking lot like warm honey, gilding the cars and making everything look almost magical. I lined up at the check-in table behind a couple dressed in coordinated neutrals, their outfits clearly planned together.
The woman at the table smiled warmly at them and handed each a thick, gold-trimmed badge with their names written in looping calligraphy, table numbers printed beneath in elegant script. Then it was my turn. She didn’t look up at my face.
She reached under the table with the efficiency of someone who’d done this a hundred times and handed me a badge made of thin white paper. No calligraphy. No ribbon.
The story doesn’t end here — it continues on the next page.
